The DTI model is just one of many engineering design models. Engineering in STEM education provides a bridge for bringing together different subject areas and an authentic context for real-life problems. We can’t assume students are engaging in engineering when we see them building bridges out of toothpicks or constructing a 3D-printed robot.
High-quality engineering design challenges should require students to work as an engineer might, engaging in engineering practices outlined in the NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards). Let's start by looking at the NGSS and then, specifically, the engineering practices themselves. |
